Largest ever artist group to embark on mentoring journey
Youth Arts Queensland today announced the participants of the 2012 JUMP National Mentoring Program.
Seventy-five young and emerging artists - the largest ever intake into an Australian artist mentoring program - have made their artistic match and, over the next ten months, will work with respected arts professionals to advance their careers and make their mark on the Australian arts industry.
Funded by the Australia Council for the Arts as part of their 2008 – 2012 programs of support for Young and Emerging Artists, JUMP identifies and promotes excellence in artistic practice.
JUMP is managed nationally by Youth Arts Queensland in collaboration with state and territory delivery partners.
Julie Woodward, CEO of Youth Arts Queensland, said: “We received over 280 applications from across Australia, highlighting the central importance of mentoring in the arts industry.”
“The one hundred and fifty artists and mentors who are about to begin their mentoring journeys will join an existing network of 170 JUMP alumni; this is an amazing resource for early career artists.”
Amongst the group of successful JUMP applicants is emerging mezzo-soprano Mia Yaniw (26 years) from Nerang, Queensland who will be mentored by international operatic soprano Ghillian Sullivan.
Yaniw said that it was a great honour to be accepted into the JUMP program.
“This program helps so many young artists gain vital experience with industry professionals, really launching their careers.”
“I will work with my mentor to prepare for four operatic roles, and perform one of those in a full scale production with Newcastle Festival Opera.”
All 2012 JUMP artists will commence their mentoring journeys on 7 - 9 February when they will participate in induction events around the country.
Artist profiles of all 75 successful JUMP applicants can be found on the artists section of the JUMP website.
